Angel Aviles Chicago Shooting: In Loving Memory Of 19-Year-Old Killed In Shooting Near Walton Street and Menard Avenue

CHICAGO — A 19-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday evening on Chicago’s West Side, authorities confirmed, marking another deadly incident of gun violence in the city.

The victim has been identified as Angel Aviles, 19, according to the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Aviles was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital following the shooting.

Police said officers responded to reports of a person shot at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026, near the intersection of Walton Street and Menard Avenue in the city’s Austin neighborhood. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Aviles inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to his head and leg.

Emergency responders transported Aviles to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, authorities said.

According to preliminary information from investigators, Aviles was driving his vehicle when he was approached by an unidentified male offender, who opened fire multiple times before fleeing the area. After the shooting, Aviles’ vehicle continued forward and came to a stop after striking an unoccupied parked car.

Police have not determined whether the shooting was targeted or random, and no arrests have been made as of this time. The identity of the shooter remains unknown.

Area Four detectives are actively investigating the homicide and are working to gather additional evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, as they attempt to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
